Thanks to our ideal cannabis climate (both politically and environmentally), Washington State has long been a global cannabis trendsetter and home to some of the tastiest buds you can find in the world. So in a state with so many choices, what are some of the most popular strains? While a number of strains make appearances on “most popular lists,” we’ve compiled a list of six strains you’ll love (if you don’t already) that consistently rank high among consumers in Washington State.

Dutch Treat Strain

This Indica-dominant hybrid of Dutch origin has long been a staple of the Amsterdam (Netherlands) cannabis scene. Recently, it’s becoming a mainstay of the Washington scene, too. Dutch Treat, hailing from a legendary parent — Northern Lights (a true Indica strain) — produces an interesting high. Shortly after imbibing, many consumers report they feel more of a Sativa-like cerebral head high, but that high often gives way to a comfortable body high (that is pleasant, but not overwhelming).

One reviewer on Leafly writes, “The high always starts off with a sativa like head rush in and behind the eyes, and transfers (you can literally feel it) to the body.”

Another reviewer writes, “This heavy cerebral high is perfect for a night time adventure or a long hibernation in a comfortable bed. With earthy, piney, and lemony tones, the exhales comes off very sweet, not a bit of smokiness, that left my mouth watering and wanting more.”

Blueberry Strain

Many consider Blueberry to be a true A-List strain. Blueberry fomented her status as an A-lister after bursting on the scene nearly two decades ago at the High Times’ Cannabis Cup 2000. (Blueberry took first prize in the Indica category.) However, Blueberry has been around for years dating back to the 1970s when legendary breeder, DJ Short, was honing his skills with a number of different landrace strains. Since then, as DJ Short worked with a bunch of different breeders and seed banks, Blueberry’s genetics have evolved over the years.

There’s little doubt you’ll love the high Blueberry produces which many describe as surprisingly “uplifting” for an Indica-dominant strain. One reviewer writes, “One of the most pleasant smelling strains; it also hits you quickly and intensely. The high is very uplifting, almost to the point of making you giggly, but doesn't suppress your energy as much as more pure indicas I've had. It lasts a long time and is great to help boost conversation, creativity and, frankly, make you feel great!”

DJ Short Blueberry is a heavily indica-dominant hybrid named after its creator, DJ Short. With an average THC level, this strain imparts a high that will leave you with a rush of energy and a sensation of intense, heady euphoria, then carry you into a state of relaxation and appetite that will have you reaching for the fridge. It makes for an exceptional smoke as well, providing a taste of homemade blueberry pie, meaning this strain lives up to its name.

Cinex Strain

Cinex is a great name (and an even better strain). Sure, the name sounds more appropriate for an IMAX theatre, but make no mistake: bred by crossing Cinderella 99 and Vortex, Cinex is a crowd pleaser that will appeal to even those with the most discriminating palates. With a wide spectrum of flavors that range from earthy to sweet and citrusy, Cinex produces an uplifting, energetic high that stimulates creativity and clarity. Fans of Cinex commonly report that is a great strain to elevate mood relieve pain.

According to a review on AllBud, the trichomes on Cinex “coat this viridescent strain in addition to its pine-citrus aroma taste and smell. After just a few tokes of this abstract strain, you will be uplifted into a euphoric high that takes you into a cognitive wonderland.”

Girl Scout Cookies Strain

In Washington State, we love our Girl Scout Cookies, don’t we? GSC, as she’s popularly called, is a hybrid cross between two epic strains: OG Kush (an Indica-dominant boasting a landrace heritage) and the legendary Durban Poison (one of the most popular true Sativa landrace strains).

GSC boasts an impressive number of reviews on Leafly — approaching 4000 at the time of this writing. Embodying earthy undertones with a hint of cocoa, some GSC devotees report their favorite strain provides a transcendent euphoric sensation that envelops the whole body. Sounds like a great strain for a bubble bath with your significant other on Valentine's Day (wait, isn't that just around the corner?).

One reviewer writes: “This is the most beautiful experience I have ever had. I don't feel worthy of the amazing journey this strain has afforded me. I've tried so many strains trying to find a feeling of happiness and this is it. This is heaven. This is life. I just feel so much love for the world. My entire body vibrates. I turned off the oven and decided not to binge eat so that I could meditate instead. Purity and comfort. Beautiful plant.” Wow! What a review — Sign me up!

OG Kush Strain

OG Kush is a legendary West Coast strain, although curiously, its ancestry remains a bit of a mystery. According to lore, OG’s parents are Chemdawg and Hindu Kush, giving its kush bud structure that seems ubiquitous today. Various phenotypes from OG Kush have flourished like Alpha OG and Tahoe OG. OG Kush has built a loyal following among cannasseur who praise it for demolishing stress while providing a heavy euphoric high. Noted also for its earthy pine and sour lemon notes, its aroma has become a signature property.

Some fans describe OG Kush’s nugs as being “dense, dark and massive,” covered in orange hairs and crystals, while possessing an aroma that is piney and chocolatey. And, with a high that is uplifting and euphoric, while easing social anxiety and making them talkative.

Blue Dream Strain

Blue Dream should come as no surprise in making our list. It consistently ranks as the #1 or #2 seller not just in Washington, but in Colorado, Oregon and California. No doubt, Blue Dream is not the best strain out there (by any means). There are plenty of epic strains for the discriminating cannaseur.  Nonetheless, Blue Dream continues to be a favorite among consumers. Why? Consistency. Blue Dream is consistently “pretty good,” likely owing to how easy it is to cultivate (while producing prolific yields). It's also truly "open source" (if a strain can be “open source”), meaning Blue Dream’s genetics aren’t a closely held secret by a small handful of growers. Finally, it's a branding success. People associate Blue Dream with being well-priced and consistently good.

The history of this legendary West Coast strain is pretty interesting. Blue Dream was bred by crossing a Blueberry indica with a Haze sativa. Evoking properties from its parent — Blueberry — Blue Dream produces notes of aromatic sweet berry essence. Users report excellent symptom relief, without overbearing sedative effects. And, it’s a great everyday recreational strain!
